Research Into Similar Products- Layout
The reason I have chose these two magazines to analyse for layouts is because of the different uses in the sides of the magazine. As we see on the NME magazine the coverlines and headlines are shown on the left under the masthead this is because if the magazine is on a rack then you will be able to see what the magazine involves before picking it up to see if you would like it or not, however with the rolling stones magazines we clearly see that the coverlines are on the right hand side, therefore not giving too much away about the magazine, therefore the customer would have to pick it up due to the curiosity of not being able to tell whats in the magazine straight away. This makes me think about my magazine and how I should present the coverlines. I believe having it on the right hand side is more effective as it will force the customer to pick it up and have a good glance, therefore propably making them buy it.

Research Into Similar Products - Layout
From this magazine we see that they have took an unusual approach to the style of the front cover. This in itself challenges the conventions of a magazine as no real clear coverline is used to outline what is in the magazine from the get go, therefore this gives the contents of the magazine a mystery effect allowing the customer to imagine what type of content will be covered throughout the magazine. We see the colour scheme compliments the blandness of the magazine itself showing it doesn't give much away, therefore making the customer want to buy the magazine due to their curiosity.

Research into Similar Products - Colour Scheme
I like the house style of this magazine because it has very vintage tint to it, the colour beige is a very chilled colour giving this persona of a relaxed magazine which would appeal to many readers due to it seeming like a nice read, I like the way the black writing matches the hair of the coverstar which shows coordination showing the magazine as organised, I will try and portray a vintage theme through my magazine and I will take inspiration from this magazine

Research into Similar Products - Mastheads
Mastheads
RollingStone's masthead is very Vintage and Old school, this is established by the Curved and Cartoony Text, also the texture seems very gritty which gives a grunge feel to it. I like this masthead design because it gives an unedgy feel to the magazine which I will hope to be trying to achieve through my magazine.
NME is effective due to it being only three letters this gives it a Sense of Independence, however serious through the Capital Letters with a dark red tint, showing it means business.

Research Into Similar Product - Photography
Photography:
For further research i looked into indie rock bands and looked at comparing the use of photography. Both bands are seen grouped together looking different to how other artist are presented, for example pop artists are always seen posing in a specific way which is similar to how teens are posing in to days society or just is direct mode of address smiling. I like the photography of the Arctic Monkeys as it is very individual and just demonstrates an understanding of their personality. The photography of the band Oasis shows them in direct mode of address with a very series look on their faces which could demonstrate how serious they take their music and the type of music and personalities they have.

Research into Similar Products - Band Names
Band Names
I have chose these two band names as I believe they stand out from all the rest because they are individual in the way they are presented.
For example the font of the Beatles is and unusual type of font and is very compact and well put together. I like this name because I like how the B is bigger than the rest of the Letters giving them importance and dominance.
The Bottom band Vampire Weekend is very bold and stands out this is important as you don't want your name to be to bland and boring as it will give your band the persona of being out dated and having terrible content

Research Into Similar Products - Similar Artists
I have conducted research into similar artists, the type of genre I want to make my magazine is Indie Rock. Therefore the image above is a collage of 4 different bands. I believe looking at certain bands within the same genre allows me to understand how they are portrayed through certain images, I also believe looking at the way they are dressed is important, this is because it will make me think of how to dress my artist.
The first band is Peace, I like this image because the clothing portrays their Individual stance as a band, I believe the colours being dark gives them an edgy touch.
The second band is Catfish and the Bottleman, this band is portrayed as very chilled out and not as posed as the other bands giving a simplistic feel to the image which I am going to portray through my bands.

Research in Similar Products - Layout
Here is a music connection magazine, we see here that the writing is on the left hand side in a list type of way, this is effective due to it being easier for the readers to read and to find out where certain articles are in the magazine, this makes me think if it would be more effective to do this for my magazine due to the simplistic look. I like how the image is full on the right hand side giving the cover star a sense of importance, and showing what the magazine could be about

Research in Similiar Products - House Style
Through this magazine I can clearly see how the colour scheme can be effective. We clearly see that the house style is red and black, this combining with the cover stars pose gives a rebellious persona to the magazine. We see that red is not used to overwhelm the front cover of the magazine but it is used for more of a pop of colour this is to direct attention to the parts that are the most important. I like this house style because its simplistic yet effective, this makes me think of doing this for my actual magazine.

Research in Similar Products - Fonts and Cover Star
I like how the writing is small on this magazine giving the cover star the upmost importance in this magazine. The fonts on this magazine are completely different making each of them individual meaning the audience will pay attention to each section the magazine equally. Lighting is also a prime factor as the natural lighting makes Sam Smith seem down to earth, this is what I want to portray through my magazine

Preliminary Task
Here is a contents page and front cover for my magazine this allows me to showcase my understanding in how a magazine is constructed. I used Paint.net to construct it as well as publisher to make this. I took a Medium close up as my image and used it for both the front cover and contents

Drafting & Planning: Investigating Typography
In our task today, we had to decide which one of these fonts went with the magazine cover the most. In my opinion I picked out letter B as my favorite because I believe it conforms with the rest of the magazine. The house style is also given some recognition as it fits in with the Masthead and colour.
I then chose E as my second choice this because It also conforms to the house style of the magazine, however it is very bold and fits in with the image and the font is the same as the Masthead therefore creating no dimension of the fonts making it very dull and in creative.
I then chose A as it wasn't as good as the other two, however it isn't too far off. I believe the simplistic feel of the font gives a lot more effect. This is because it is still bold and stands out and catches the readers, however it does not take away from the ethos of the magazine or the masthead or coverstar.
I then chose F as my 4th option, this is because I didn't feel like it stood out as much as the others and looked very faded in with the cover star alot more. I also think its very dull and doesn't have any presence on the piece of work at all.
I then chose D as my 5th option as it is to fancy and curly and doesn't fit the ethos of the magazine at all. The magazine appears to have a grunge feel to it instead of fancy.
I then chose C as my last option. This is because the comic sans font makes the magazine cover appear to be childish. This causes the magazine not to be taken seriously.
This exercise is going to help me in the future as it has allowed me to be more picky with the typography used on certain magazines. It will give me an advantage moving forward to have a full understanding of the effect that typography can have on the reader and allow me to take more care when choosing.

Layout
The layout for this magazine is also very simplistic, much like the NME magazine contents page. This is clearly a very popular strategy as it engages the audience very effectively. The contents page is very chronologically organised, for example the features of the magazine are clearly indicated on the right hand side and are neatly presented. This shows to the readers the company of this magazine has took time in the creation of this magazine showing that they are a well presented company and deserve recognition. I like the use of the "V" for the promotion of the brand Vibe. This is used to give easy recognition without using a lot the space, allowing a spacious canvas for the readers so their not feeling overwhelmed.
Colour
The colour in this contents page is black and white, however we see a pop of colour with the red heart with a womens hand grabbing it, this could be an indication of what the article is about. The red contrasts with the black and white theme making this section of the article eye-catching therefore making the readers not pass over it and actually take time to read it.
Photography
The photography in this contents page is very much like a front cover, the model is in the middle given priority is making eye contact. This is giving the readers direct address allowing them to feel involved. The photography is also pointing out a story with Kayne west possibly his heart being ripped out by a women.
